Brest customs officers prevented an attempt to illegally smuggle a large sum of cash across the customs border. The crime was discovered during the processing of an international bus at the Brest border crossing.
The inspector's attention was drawn to the bus driver, a citizen of the Republic of Belarus. He presented a small amount of personal cash, concealing the over $32,000 in cash found in his pockets and underwear during an inspection.
It was subsequently established that the driver had volunteered to assist a Ukrainian citizen traveling on the same bus in smuggling cash. The passenger himself had placed over $10,000 in his personal belongings.
Therefore, the total amount of cash transported by the Ukrainian citizen amounted to over $42,000 in equivalent.
Brest Customs has opened a criminal case under Part 2 of Article 228 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus. The article provides for punishment of up to five years' imprisonment.
